i've have no idea how this happens or what's causing this. The effect is that
all everyone accessing my shared folders cannot get thru.

I'm using WinXP Pro SP2 and the Server Service is tagged to start
automatically. I am using a domain account with local admin rights on my
machine. I have not made any changes into windows configurations / registry
et al and so my machine is near plain vanilla so to speak.

First, look in Event Viewer, and see if there are any messages.

Second, look at the Server service, see what dependencies it has, and see if any
of its dependencies are not starting, or are showing difficulties.

Hi chuck,

The Server Service has no dependencies on it. I did not find anything
regarding the server service in the Event log. The only error that I saw was
on the System eventlog that pertains to the QoS Packet Scheduler failing to
start. This happened at the same time that the Server Service was paused.
What I noticed in the Server Service pause log was that the user that
initiated it was my domain account.
