I have Asian languages installed on my computer (XP-Pro)
for reading and writing Korean.

Although English is my main language and all defaults are
set to English the computer displays pages on Internet
Explorer using Korean encoding, even if the pages are in
English. This results in a lot of gibberish and
incorrectly displayed characters.

I cannot figure out how to get the computer to stop doing
this.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
R.

Having fetched up a page with gibberish, click on Tools >
Encoding and tell us what you see.

I see Auto Select checked and also either Korean or
Unicode selected.

A couple of things come to mind. In Internet Explorer:

1. Tools > Internet Options > General > Languages {and see
what you have there}
2. View (not "Tools", sorry about that) > Encoding > More >
Western European (ISO)

By the way if you haven't done, you can add an "Encoding"
button to the IE toolbar:

Right click on an empty space in the toolbar > Customize >
Select "Encoding" in the left pane > Add

Also try:

Control Panel > Regional and Language Options > Advanced >
"Select a language to match the language version of
non-Unicode programs you want to use."
