Whilst in portugal I had a terminal accident with my
laptop. In dire need In purchased a new one locally.
Windows XP is in Portuguese. Can this be changed to
English, or is it easier for me to learn Portuguese !

Hi

You will have to purchase a full Retail English version of XP as the
Languages can't be changed. You can then either install the English instead
of the Portuguese one, or dual boot both Languages.

Sorry, but no, you can not change the language. Your only choices
are buying and installing an English version or learning
Portuguese.
