Hi
I am running an internal LAN - with a 8-port Hub using only 6 computers all
running XP Pro

off the 6 computers two literally misbehave on a day-to-day basis - i have
re-installed Win XP Pro on both computers in an attempt to clean up the
system but to NO LUCK
when browsing the network the computer
a) takes ages to browse the network
c) sometimes conencts and soemtimes does nto show any computer
c) sometime shows only itself and none other
d) when it does connect to a networked computer it just bogs down and cant
even read a 40Kb file off the networked computer -

my setting for both 192.168.0.*
running netBIOS over TCP/IP
all on the same workgroup

please help im dumbfounded

Check the speed and duplex settings on the network adapters, sometimes they
can cause problems.
If set to automatic, try setting them to 10MB and Half Duplex
Does that help?

Mey Mark - thank you for the advice - I tried it but seems to be stuck at
the same point - one of the computers freezes up the other Shows the
networked computers but when trying to get to a shared drive on it - it then
displays an error ( \\**** not accessible contact the network
adminstrator -- ) still baffled

One questions on a 10MB card with half dulex would that make the connection
slow? I technically don't have any heavy data moving around but would like
to know

Thanks for all the help

----

i have another question - someone has advised me to install a domain
controller? me being a complete lay person - what is a domain controller -
and can i set one up in XP Pro or do i have to dish in to buy myself 2003
server?

thanx

Slower than 100 MB Full or 10MB full, but it would still be quite fast.
I suggested it because you used the word "Hub", hubs are half duplex
devices.
A switch on the other hand is a full duplex device.
