LAN Disabled

Hello Everyone -

I have a puzzling problem that someone might kindly be
able to shed some light on:
I have a Win XP Pro user who loses his connectivity to our
network every few days. He shuts down and restarts daily,
and when he cannot access the network, we check his "LAN
Connection", and it is somehow set to "disabled". All we
have to do is select it, and the "Enable" it, and all is
well.
I have given few details,(we use DHCP, etc) but from what
is offered, has anyone seen this - I have several XP Pro
machines, and this is a first!
Thanks!
Dale

I have had this happen only twice in the last 6 months to
two different users, so it's not exactly an everyday
occurrence, but never found any particular reason for it.
I'd be interested to hear if anyone knows a reason why.

This could be a power management thing. Have you checking the NIC's
settings in device manager?

Hi ken -

Thanks for the response!

That is something I would not have thought of, and I will
certainly check those settings.
I have had weird things happen in the past with things
like WOL for a NIC, (bringing a PC out of standby, or
starting it on it's own!) but I had not applied that
knowledge (although somewhat different) to this problem.
Power mangement can exhibit MANY strange tendencies, and
that is a good suggestion.
This client is not here in my local office, but I will
create an excuse (if need be) to see him in the next
couple of days, and will post any findings here. It is a
new PC, maybe 3-4 weeks out.
Again, thanks for the reply!
Dale

Hi Ken -

RATS!

Have now had a chance to visit the "problem child" PC in
question. As you suggested, I checked the properties under
Device Manager for the NIC, and it did indeed have
a "Power Management" or equal tab on the property sheet.
Unfortunately, nothing on that sheet was checked. There
was a setting that allowed the NIC to bring the machine
out of standby or hibernate, and it even alluded to
problems that could be expected if that was allowed to
happen, but again it was not ticked, so I guess that rules
that out.
I'll have to pursue this from another angle.
Again, thanks!

I've encountered some situations similar to that. I am using static IPs. A workstation recentl
just lost connection to server in the morning. I checked the NIC and it was grayed out (disabled). Also th
system was running so slow

Don't know the cause yet.
possible causes I'm looking at: might have download some programs from the Internet and install
might have been the update from Microsoft.
