Everyone was so helpful last week with my question about the KVM switch. My thanks once again.

I have two computers and would like to use this type of switch to cut down on desktop clutter and take advantage of a good quality monitor and speakers.

I forgot to ask in my earlier message, if I use this switch, can I leave both computers on and running at the same time?

My purpose is to use one computer for dedicated digital photography work. When it is rendering a long video, it can take several hours. While this is taking place, I want to switch back to # 2 computer to work on other things, while computer #1 is still running.

If so, will switching to computer #2 via a KVM switch interfere with the processing of the digital video on computer #1?

Thank you for your time.

yes

Yes! A KVM (keyboard/video/mouse) switch is designed to allow all the PCs
that is connected to, to be be working at the same time. Usually used in
setup for mutliple servers. Just make sure you get the electronic versions
since there are still some mechanical manual units on sale.

Yes, both will work at the same time but one thing I have found when using
different types of KVMs is that you should initially boot one computer
totally before turning on the second computer and immediately switching the
KVM to the second computer. Some times Windows won't set the video card to
the proper refresh rate/resolution if there is not a monitor attached when
booting. This will occur if you boot both computers at the same time.

You will get just what you need by going into a retailler and examining the
range available.

Bear in mind that these units were first developed to manage two or more
servers so that one need not have the clutter of multiple
keyboards/mice/monitors equal to the number of servers. So not only do they
save space [and cost of it in offices] but they also save on the expense of
all these items.

No matter which one you chose, all PCs can be left 'ON'. The 'switching'
between PCs is a keyboard function and won't interfere with any applications
running.

If you use an optical mouse it may appear swtiched on at all times, even
when the PCs are both off, just 'cause there is power in the Switch Unit.
