I continue to get the error message, NTLDR is missing. I guess this is the
NT Leader file. I have no idea how I lost it. When I look at the
Knowledgebase, all of the articles either pertain to computers running 95,
98, or Me or to installing XP over it. My computer came with XP. Does anyone
know an article that is simply about how to use boot diskettes to fix the
problem regardless how it happened?

Thanks.

Bert

Bert,
This article will get you going in the right direction on replacing ntldr or
getting into the Recovery Console so that Windows can repair itself:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;318728

NTLDR is one of the three boot/loader files required to boot into an NT OS:
NTLDR, NTDetect.com & Boot.ini.

If any of those were inadvertently deleted from the root of your C:
partition before rebooting, it would leave you in a non-bootable state.

Good Luck!

Here are 2 articles that desrcibe how to prepare a floppy to use in the event of this happening; Create a Boot Disk for an NTFS or FAT Partition in Windows XP http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q305595 Use System Files to Create a Boot Disk to Guard Against Being Unable to Start Windows XP http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q314079 the problem is that you need to do this while the system is working.

Jeff,

Thanks for the help. I probably worded my question poorly. I have all the
diskettes for 95, 98, 2K, and XP. I was just looking for the article about
how to fix the NTLDR using the diskettes I have. By the way, this may be a
stupid question, but does one have to use the four diskettes in XP or can
you boot from the 98 Startup disk?

Andy,

Thanks,

Those are great. Quick and stupid question: When booting form diskettes into
XP, do I have to boot from the four diskettes I made from XP for XP or can I
boot from a 98 disk? Is that a stupid question?

Bert

Thanks for the info. Actually, I have three PCs that are running XP and four
more at work. So, access to a running XP is no problem. And, I have a full
version WindowsXP Pro for all three of my personal PCs. I refuse to purchase
the PCs without the actual OS CD, and the companies comply at that point. I
don't like restore CDs. So I should be able to fix it using the recovery
console.

As far as the four diskettes, actually it's six (sorry). These are the
diskettes I downloaded from Microsoft's XP boot diskette site:

Windows XP Professional: Setup Disks for Floppy Boot Install

Thanks again for the help.

Bert, as far as I know you will not be able to use any of those disks to
boot to XP. You need the XP CD to boot to recovery console and I presume
that you have a recovery CD. Do you have a friend that is running XP? Try
copying these files
A:\boot.ini
A:\NTDETECT.COM
A:\ntldr
to a floppy and boot from it. Turn off read only in the properties box for
each of the files on the HD, copy the files, then restore the read only
attribute.

What are the 4 diskettes you wrote about?
