Hello,

I am trying to retrieve data from my hard disk
after Win xp crashed. I booted with the Knoppix
CD and I'm able to see the partitions (hd , hda1, hda2).
hda2 seems to contain my c:\ files. I have no problems with
files which are not in the c:\Windows folder. However I'm
unable to see the files which were there in my desktop
under my username 'patrick' in the documents and settings folder.
Also the files under "My Documents" for the same user name are not
visible.

Is there a way to access these files?

I haven't used Knoppix so I can't offer any suggestions on what may be
wrong but you could try this http://snipurl.com/7qvm

.
If your files are encrypted in NTFS (you've ticked 'make
my folders private') then the Linux NTFS driver can't read
them.

have you tried a repair install - boot from your XP CD and
choose to repair the existing installation of Windows.

With deference to BMC Linux systems read the headers of each file, so if
they're there they'll be seen even if they are encrypted and 'hidden'. I
have Knoppix 3.3 running on the other PC now, and have used it to
retrieve files from NTFS file systems occasionally.

Is there anyway to decrypt those folders or to access them
using something other than Knoppix?

I have a Dell laptop (OEM), and when I follow the instructions
after booting with the reinstallation disk to do a setup, I'm
asked to choose the partition on which to do the 'install'.
Since it didn't give the option to do a 'repair', i'm fearing
it's going to remove the Windows folders, hence I didn't proceed.

There is a repair with the recovery console option, but in this
site they have warned against using it:

Sorry, you're right! Knoppix does indeed read files
regardless of NTFS permissions. What is does not do is
read EFS encrypted files, although it can list them. This
is what I was thinking of originally, but at the time was
functioning with too little sleep or caffeine.

Now if the OP has used EFS encryption (right-click
file/folder, properties, advanced, tick "encrypt
data...") then he really will have trouble. Knoppix can
not crack the public/private key encryption, although
someone may be working on this.

Does XP even try to boot? What does it do or not do?
Do you have another Windows XP computer into which you
can put your hard disk to try to read the files from
there?

If not then the Recovery Console isn't all that bad.
Daunting to the uninitiated, sure, but very useful.

Firstly I would try the suggestion on the page you cited:
Go into recovery console, run the bootcfg command, reboot
and see if your existing installation is available to
repair.

If not, there is a good guide to getting under the bonnet
and using the recovery console to back up your system
files for restoration after a reinstall:
