hello.
I recently upgraded my desktop PC to windows xp pro, and spent last evening
downloading and installing all the updates (including service pack 2).
A little history...I'm already familiar with windows xp, because I have it
on my laptop. I previously had windows ME installed on my desktop. A
failure of my bootable HD prompted my lazy self, to finally install a bigger
HD, install a better OS (which gave me the excues to splurge on an awesome
graphics card, as well), and just do various stuff I've been neglecting to
do, with this PC. So, I have a nice, newly formated HD, and my system is,
essentially, "like new", without years of software debrie cluttering it up.
I actually installed XP about a week or two ago, as I was doing the work
mentioned above. Shortly after, I installed the drivers and software for my
most important peripherals (i.e. my scanner/coppier/printer...it's an "all in
one" model). I've restarted this system several times, and just ran it
through it's common tasks and such, to make sure everything was working
without glitches. Worked fine.
Then, last night, I installed the service pack 2.
When I rebooted, windows XP started treating my Lexmark X73
scanner/copier/printer, as though it were a removable device, complete with
the "safely remove hardware" icon, down near the clock display.
I'm very familiar with this icon, as I have a few usb flash drives, and a
few other toys that evoke it's presence...so, I know what it's for. I just
can not figure out why it would ever do this with a device which will
normally be connected to a PC, all of the time...(who unplugs their scanner
or printer from their desktop PC when their not using it?)
If I do use the option to "safely remove", then it disables my scanner
(possibly the printer, too...not sure)...so, I can not use it, until I've
rebooted my system again...to find the "safely remove hardware" icon, all
over again. This is just weird.
I uninstalled the drivers for my scanner/copier/printer and reinstalled them
all over again, in hopes it would deal with this quirk...It did not.
Has anyone else encountered this sort of thing? Any thoughts? I don't want
to disable "plug n play" (if that's even possible), I'm just wondering if I
can get it to stop treating my scanner/printer like this. I see no benefit
in it being like this, and only the possability of it becomming a neusance.
Thank you for your time and attention.
