Keyboard works...then it doesn't

I have a most perplexing problem: On a PIII 866 running XP Home, my standard
101-keyboard works perfectly fine in one profile...but not in another
profile. I can log off of one and on to another and witness the keyboard go
to sleep.

Before I dig into the bowels of this machine's settings, I wanted to check
if there might be an obvious cause to this behavior or a few obvious places
to look. I have never seen this one before...

.
Have you tried another keyboard...

It isn't the keyboard because he said it works fine in one profile, but
not in the other. In the profile that isn't working, click
Start-Run-Type devmgmt.msc and click ok. Now expand the Keyboard and
remove the keyboard (it may have a yellow exclamation by it). Now REBOOT
and Windows should automatically reinstall it for you. If it did not
exist, try using the Add Hardware Wizard in Control Panel ;)

Tried that (although easier said than done, b/c I can't type anything!). No
exclamation mark, and I could not remove it because I couldn't press Delete!
I wonder what happens if I remove it from the profile in which it is working
properly. I'll try that...

You don't need to press delete. Just right click and select uninstall ;)
