Hi,

I have a new PC running XP with an old PS2 keyboard.

I leave the machine switched on all the time. Sometimes (less than once a
week) when I go to start using it in the morning, the keyboard does not
respond - no response from the num lock light or anything. If I shutdown and
restart the PC everything is OK

I used the same keyboard with my previous PC and never had this problem.

Any ideas welcome

Andy

Might try a new driver

Thanks for the links. Unfortunately I don't think any of them will work for
me. It's just a generic PS2 keyboard so I don't want an MS driver, and the
second link refers to 'keyboard and mouse' whereas my problem is just the
keyboard.

I've tried another, newer keyboard to see if that helps. If not, I'll
investigate a different keyboard driver or the MS fix (worst case is buy a
new USB keyboard I guess)

Also, check which PS/2 slot you have the keyboard plugged into. Most
newer computers have both PS/2 ports as keyboard compatible, but older
ones may not fully support a keyboard in the mouse PS/2 slot. Make sure
you have it snugly plugged in with the computer turned off and then turn
it on since PS/2 is not plug and play compaitble. It really sounds like
the keyboard is being shut down by power management, but I didn't think
this was possible for PS/2 devices.

I still would recommend a nice USB keyboard (maybe even wireless) for
yourself as a nice treat :)

Actually you are not far off the truth.

I have a dual monitor system on the new PC and the second monitor is on a
KVM.

now the KVM won't switch to that channel (the new PC second monitor) unless
there is a keyboard input present.

However, I don't want to connect the keyboard on the new PC to the KVM
because I mostly use the KVM to control other PCs that I'm using at the same
time as the new PC (hope you're following this).

As a workaround I found that using a USB mouse and connecting the mouse
input on the new PC to the keyboard input on the KVM caused the KVM to sense
that the PC was turned on and hence I could use it for the secondary
monitor.

I've unplugged this now and the keyboard problems have disappeared.
Unfortunately that means I can no longer hook the secondary monitor up
through the KVM. It's a shame as this worked OK on my previous PC.
