keyboard problem

When I boot the machine the keyboard works fine. That is,
I am able to hit F2 or F8 to go into Setup mode. But once
it boots the the login screen (Ctrl-Alt-Del screen) the
keyboard and mouse don't work. What is wrong and how do I
fix this?

I tried booting in Safe Mode and also tried going back
to "Last Known Good Configuration" and neither one of
those will work either.

Thanks,
BW

Are you using a usb mouse or keyboard? check your
settings in the bios for usb support

It's on a laptop. Sorry I forgot to mention that piece
of info. The mouse is a touchpad type.

For laptops, there are often software programs/drivers that are required
that are not included with XP. Try installing these drivers again. If
you post your make and model of laptop, I can even try to find the
updated drivers for you.

Nathan,

Thanks for the help, but the problem is I can't even boot
the machine. Once it gets to the Logon screen (where it
says "Hit 'Ctrl-Alt-Delete'" to logon) the keyboard does
not work at all. Neither does the mouse. Like I stated
in my original post, it works fine for changing setup
things (hitting F8 while it starts up). But then it
doesn't work at all once it boots.

I think a clean re-install of XP is going to be required.
Thanks for the help though.

Doh! My fault, that didn't even register. You can try doing a repair
installation before you try a clean install. Boot off the XP CD, choose
to install, then it will find the existing install of XP and offer to
repair it, press R to repair, and then go from there ;)
