Keyboard Issue

I posted this on the XP Basics Group, had no luck, might get lucky here...

I have a Gateway that I bought 2 years ago, it came with a Millennium
Keyboard, with some shortcut buttons. I didn't have to use it at that time
since the keyboard I had was working fine until now. So I connected it.
However some of the shortcut buttons don't work, I followed all the steps to
set them. What works are the Sound buttons, E-mail and Explorer. What
don't work are, the Shortcut (My Documents) , Shopping and the Help buttons.

I contacted Gateway and since this keyboard is not made anymore, they didn't
have a clue on what to do and suggested I update the keyboard driver. First
support person gave me the wrong driver (not for XP) and the second support
person, well it didn't work either.

So I thought maybe someone here in this forum may have had the problem and
may know how to solve it. I am running XP Pro SP2. The keyboard is Not
made for USB, it connects directly to the keyboard slot on the computer.

Hope someone out there has a solution. Thanks,

Note: I did run the Millennium Keyboard program and tried all kinds of
setups to make these buttons work, but the said buttons just won't respond.

Thanks again,

MarkC

That's the right answer....next is, configuring the buttons/keyboard
settings in Windows to work after you do it. You probably have to assign the
buttons. What do you have in control panel | keyboard?

Did you check the Gateway support site? This really is going to go back to
them after all - it's their hardware/driver.

Yes, I assigned the buttons by opening the Millennium Keyboard program
located in the Control Panel. But it doesn't work like it should. The
buttons and settings for E-Mail, and Internet do work. But when I set the
buttons to for My Documents, Shopping and Help and press OK, Done. Nothing
happens when I press the buttons.

Contact the seller of the keyboard for the proper drivers. If they dont
exist, they dont exist.

It is simply a driver problem. Get the correct driver and the keyboard will
function properly. You are NOT going to get Gateway drivers from here. Go to
Gateway. If they can not supply them for you, consider another company the
next time you buy a computer.

It is up to Gateway. It is their driver.

It's possible that the newer security updates affect the functioning of the
older driver- ask Gateway if they have an update- if yes then install it.
If no then ask them when they will be providing one- if they aren't you also
have your answer and an indication of Gateways support- If they don't
support you then consider whether you will support them in the future
purchases and recommendations, and tell them.

Then consider buying a new keyboard with the features you want. It wouldn't
be from Gateway at this stage if it was me.

I can't stand the millenium keyboard. The buttons, especially the volume
button, gets inadvertantly pushed and the only way to restore volume control is
to log off (or reboot, I can't recall). See
http://support.gateway.com/s/issues/662931810.shtml for Gateway's description of
some ways in which this keyboard is not XP-compatible, which may explain your
issues.

Hi Lem:

It looks like you hit the nail on the head. I read the link you sent and
the problem exists because the computer is set in fast user switching. It
explains it all. Thank You!

I want to thank the rest who submitted their views, and yes I'm beginning to
drift from Gateway, and the next computer may NOT be a Gateway. In the
past, their hardware was great (I had no problems), but lately that's not
case. Not only the keyboard issue, but I upgraded to a Gateway 19" flat
panel monitor. I got it, connected it, and it was very very bright. No
matter how I adjusted it, it wasn't near what I wanted. I noticed it wasn't
uniform black, had different intensity areas, so I returned it as being
defective. My 19" CRT is better. I will try one more, and if I get the
same result, then that will be the deciding factor on switching to a
different company on my next computer.
