I work with visually impaired clients and am trying to figure out how to move
from column to column in word by usng the keyboard

Have you checked the Accessibilty Help (Accessibility Features in Office Help
section) located in the "See Also" section of the Word Help pane?

AFAIK, There is no keyboard command for that purpose if you're referring to
newspaper-type columns. Perhaps VBA could handle something like that, but
I'm not sure.

I believe the problem is that 'columns' are not really physical structures
in the Word file - they are simply directional indicators in the flow of the
text, which for this type of layout is top-to-bottom, left-to-right. If the
doc could be set up using Tables instead of columns Tab/Shift+Tab & R/L
Arrow Keys would accommodate R/L, Up/Dn Arrows for row-to-row.

I don't know what this has got to do with visual impairment but if you mean
columns in a table, use the Tab key.If you mean newspaper style columns I'm
not sure there is a way.

Alt + the Down Arrow will move the insertion point to the top of the next
column. Alt + the Up Arrow will move the insertion point to the top of the
previous column.
You can also use Alt + Drag to select the text in a column.

I hope this has been helpful to you!

By Golly, Carol, I had forgotten all about that one! Thanks for the memory
jog... that isn't even documented in the Help.

Now that you mention it, repeatedly using either Alt+Up?Dn will also take
you 'around the horn' in one direction or the other. The only limitations
are a) the keystroke only functions within the confines of a single page -
it won't advance you to the next page or back to the previous page, and b)
the keystroke only operates if the target column has content.

Hey - I owe you! I've learned lots from you!

Thank you so very, very much, Carol!!! I have read all of the online helps
on keyboard shortcuts since getting Office 2007, but to no avail, despite
having used this function routinely since at least Word 3 or 4 through 2000
and 2003.

I am not particularly "challenged" other than really preferring the speed
that I can attain while working from the keyboard consistently, instead of
jumping off and on. I am just now learning how to use the touchpad and pen,
so that should prove interesting.

Oh, and one more thing that might help with the first lady's query: It is
much easier to perform all sorts of editing after zooming out to 500%, so
that the detailed shape items fit into place and look seemlessly connected
once the document in display or printed at 100%.

Your advice is increasingly valuable. I've been looking high and low for
this info. Can't imagine why it's become so obscure. Thanks!
