I bought a new computer with Win XP and Office XP Basic. I needed a better Office XP so bought Office XP Pro, Uninstalled Office XP Basic and installed Office XP Pro. I was not using Office XP Basic, so when my daughter upgraded her laptop to Win XP, we installed the Office XP Basic. Microsoft would not allow it to be registered. What should I do?

Microsoft only allows ONE registration of a key; when you
bought your original system, the Office XP Basic key was
registered with Microsoft and deemed unuseable for any
other machine. Granted, you own the software and are
placing it on one machine, but Microsoft doesn't know
that (they think they're being ripped off; like they
don't have enough money already).

Either pony up and give Microsoft more money (ie. buy
another copy of Office) OR download a crack.

good luck.

I assume by 'Basic' you mean the Small Business Edition. This is an OEM
(Original Equipment Manufacturer) licence and is *permanently* adhered to
the computer it was sold with - and cannot be transferred, no matter what
fate befalls the original system. Therefore, you *cannot* give it to your
daughter, as it will only *activate* on the system it was sold with (FYI,
*activation* is mandatory, *registration* is not).

Therefore, your daughter should purchase her own licence (Office XP is no
longer sold, so she should purchase 2003).
