50 -60 % of the time when I enter a key code for Windows or Office I get a
digit wrong and have to fix it before setup continues. I try to be careful,
but the jumble of letters and numbers can easily get mixed up.

I am trying to get together a software inventory program and I want to key
my keys in there for a printable list so I can store my software in a safety
deposit box or other off site storage however I just know that 20-30% of
them will be mistyped. Is there some sort of utility that MS has that will
verify that the key codes are valid like a macro for a spreadsheet or
something?

Yes, the B and 8 bite me a lot in addition to transposing some letters some
time. I do use the ProdKey finder from Nirsoft which works great. That can
do a whole domain in one shot which is great.

My problem is not knowing what key came with what computer because the key
is on the side of the computer. The problem is if I have to reinstall
because of corruption, bad deployment, or some other reason I don't know
what CD to grab out of the cabinet - XP release, SP1, SP1a, or SP2.
Microsoft made it so you have to have the right CD key to match the right
service pack level which is a real pain and they did not write on the OEM
tags what SP the install was on so unless you wrote it down at the time,
that info is lost. Like most IT, the moment the box comes in the door they
get all the latest Windows Updates, Service Packs, etc and they are kept up
to date so I always have a record of what they are now.

As an example, we have a couple of developers that sometime destroy their
install because they are continually installing and reinstalling their
custom application on their test setup. That is what these computers are
for. The computers came in at various times with XP release, Sp1, SP1a and
SP2. It was not until SP2 was released that I realized that I could not use
the keys with a different service pack.

It would be great to find a utility where if I put in my key code it would
say either invalid or XP SP1, SP2, Retail, VOL, etc.
