keeping CMD window opened

Is there a way to set an environmental variable or flag so that when I
double click a executable that runs in DOS mode the program doesn't just
flash the DOS window and end. I want the window to stay opened so I can see
the results. Thanks

I don't know of a way to do that.
but if you go to start run and type cmd and click on ok you get the
DOS box.
You can also type command and click ok.
There is a subtle difference between CMD and Command
but I don't remember it.
You can run Dos applications from there.
