After the about.blank homepage problem is fixed on a computer with xp how do
you keep from getting it again? Is the xp firewall, spyware blaster, and
the mvp hosts file sufficient? The internet connection is dial-up.

David

My friend's computer had the about.blank home page problem.

In safe mode I ran CWShredder, SpyBotS&D, HighJackThis and fix entries that
should not be there. Deleted two about.blank entries in the registry. I
then rebooted and ran CWShredder, SpyBot, and HighJackThis again and things
were clean. Then used Internet Options to reset the home page and connected
to the internet. Everything was fine. Did this several times and did not
see about.blank. Two days later, I was told that about blank came back.

I have read the removal instructions in the Spyware Info Forum and they are
more complex that what I did. This time it may be harder. So before I try
to remove it again I want to know how to stop it from coming back.

I do not have this problem and the only difference in the computers that I
can see is that I use the mvp hosts file. However, there may be more to it
than that. That is why I asked recommendation about not getting it again.

SpywareBlaster /may/ help:
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

Unfortunately, CWS variants are appearing quicker (and more numerous) than
Merijn can keep up with. CWShredder v1.57.0 is nearly 2 weeks old now. The
best I can advise at this point is to be ready to run CWShredder after every
boot. Hopefully doing so will continue to remove CWS though it may not be
able to stop it from "reinventing itself" at the next boot.

It's one nasty sucker! Keep tuned to this station for news of a CWShredder
update.

The computer had SpywareBlaster installed with the latest update when the
second infection happened. That is why I will install a hosts file next
time even though it will restrict his internet site access. I will let him
complain about that instead.

David

The firewall was active. As I said, SpyBotS&D with the 3/4/04 update was
installed and immunize was active. SpywareBlaster was installed and active.
I did not say but AVG was running and up to date; however, I do not think
that an A/V program stops about.blank. There was no HOSTS file. I did
check the history and did not see any porn sites. He said that he did not
go to any.

The two day history and ITFs showed job search sites, eBay, and sites for
planning a wedding. My hosts file blocks some links to eBay but not eBay
directly so the links that he used could be a problem. Also, some of the
search links he used are blocked on my computer. I will try the HOSTS file
and see if that works.

David,

XP professional does have its own Intenet Connection Firewall. The help file
says the following:

To enable or disable Internet Connection Firewall
Open Network Connections
Click the Dial-up, LAN or High-Speed Internet connection that you want to
protect, and then, under Network Tasks, click Change settings of this
connection.
On the Advanced tab, under Internet Connection Firewall, select one of the
following:
To enable Internet Connection Firewall (ICF), select the Protect my computer and
network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet
check box.
To disable Internet Connection Firewall, clear the Protect my computer and
network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet
check box.
Notes

To open Network Connections, click Start, click Control Panel, click Network and
Internet Connections, and then click Network Connections.
You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators
group in order to complete this procedure. If your computer is connected to a
network, network policy settings may also prevent you from completing this
procedure.
If you clear the Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing
access to this computer from the Internet check box, the firewall on your
computer is disabled, and your network is vulnerable to intrusions.
You should not enable Internet Connection Firewall on virtual private networking
(VPN) connections or on client computers because ICF will interfere with file
and printer sharing.
ICF cannot be enabled on the private connections of the Internet Connection
Sharing host computer.
Internet Connection Sharing, Internet Connection Firewall, Discovery and
Control, and Network Bridge are not available on Windows XP 64-Bit Edition.

The surest way to avoid any parasites is to stop visiting porn sites. My PC is
completely safe (and clean) just by using M$ products which comes with most new
PCs and Symantec Anti-virus which I bought for £29.99 (GBP). The virus
definitions are automatically updated once a week.

You might want to download a free version of Spybot
(http://www.safer-networking.org) which should keep out most squaters!
