FWIW

OS = Vista Ultimate - fully updated.

I installed update KB9831768, a security update for IE7, last night. It
caused some
rather odd behavior in Winmail news groups. Posts would appear in the
preview pane, then disappear and the
preview pane would change color. Then the posts (text) would reappear and
the color would return to normal.
I tried installing the update and "reverting back" 3 times, same results.
I do not have the update installed at present - all is well.

If I didn't know better, I'd swear this update contained some of the "stuff"
we used back
in the 60s/70s to give us a different perspective on life
;-)

No, but I think the people pushing Vista on everyone took their business
model from the same era. Redmond gave us a perfectly good operating system,
then announced they are shutting off the supply and you will have to go to
the new operating system, even though it sucks and nothing is really new in
it. Different package, different colors, some old . . . stuff.

Oh yeah, one more thing . . . If Vista is so perfect, why do they need
patches / updates anyway?

Noticed here also - the same condition. Also, the responsiveness of Windows
Mail has gone down the toilet. Every message I click on takes 2-4 seconds to
display in the lower pane. Replying to a message takes the same 2-4 seconds
before the reply window can be typed in.

It's time to start uninstalling the updates, one at a time, to see which one
caused this problem.

Spoken like someone who has never written a program.

Care to mention an operating system that has never needed fixing?

I uninstalled the update (KB9831768), rebooted and the undesirable condition
is gone. This update really messes with Windows Mail.

I have a question. The update in question, KB9831768, is not listed in my
update history and I cannot find it when I go to Microsoft's update pages. Is
this one of the updates that were issued on 05-08-2007? I have Windows Update
set to notify me of any updates and I will then decide whether or not to
download and install them.
The only update I can find that comes close is KB931768, a security update
for IE that was issued yesterday, 05-08-2007.
I would appreciate any assistance regarding this matter. Thank you in advance.

That is the one. I copied and pasted from the original post and didn't pick
up on the extra number *8* in there.

The correct KB article number is as you write, KB931768.

Shame on me for missing this, and even creating an incident report with the
incorrect number. Now I shall have to create another report.

Richard,

I would like to ask you a big favor. Will you reinstall that update that gave
you the problems with Windows Mail? The exact same issues you describe
were issues that I, Winston and a few others have discussed before in the
vista.mail newsgroup. None of us could ever figure out what was causing the
problem, and it wasn't happening to everyone. Winston discovered, by chance,
that after opening WinMail, if you then opened Windows Calendar, those issues
went away. This was confirmed by a few of us. It's the strangest thing, and what
one has to do with the other just didn't make any sense.

If you could please reinstall that update, then if those issues do return-
while you have WinMail open, open Windows Calendar and close it. See
if those issues go away. I would appreciate. I'm just really curious.

If you don't have the time to mess with it, I understand.

-Michael

I have downloaded the stand alone version of the update. I will reinstall it
and see if Windows Calendar has any affect upon Windows Mail. It may take a
couple of hours before I can get to the task.

I apologize too - my OP was what # started the error - I need an eye update
;-)

Thank you very much for your prompt reply. I appreciate it.

I reinstalled the Windows Update in question KB931768 (for the 3rd time -
<sigh>).

The problem still exists, even if I open Windows Calendar first. If I first
start Windows Mail and then open Windows Calendar the problem still exists.

Back to uninstalling the update. (-:

Thank you for trying.

I'll wait for the new Windows Live Mail and
stop trying to figure out WinMail.

Take care,

Michael
