When Auto Update installed this security fix KB925486
Windows XP Home would not start up the next time I turned on my machine. It
started to load but hung during startup. I had to go into Safe Mode and
uninstall KB925486. But the darned Auto Update keeps trying to install it.

I am running F-Secure Anti-Virus which is provided by my ISP so there might
be an interaction problem.

Disable the anti virus' auto scan before installing the update and see
if that helps. Set Automatic Update to download but let you decide when
and what to install.

Not installing it was my first thought but, given the severe nature of the
security threat according to Microsoft, I would prefer to install KB925486.
I only want to be able to use my computer after making it secure.

There was a similar case of an update to Windows 98 a year or two back that
prevented it from starting up. All you had to do for that was disable one
item from startup in MSCONFIG. That is the kind of fix I am looking for.

Have you tried what I suggested? It's impossible for me to know what you
did in MSCONFIG years ago with 98.

You might want to post your question to the experts in the windows update
newsgroup and scan the messages there to see if there is a similar problem
with resolution.
