I got notification of WGA tool install, and clicked to install. Halfway
through, the screen showing the installation progress locked up. I left it
all night, hoping it would finish, but it didn't. The next morning went to
Task Manager and "End Task". Next time I booted, it gave me the "Your copy
of XP may be priated" warning at the login screen.

Background:
I upgraded from ME to XP SP2, and I have run the diagnostic program noted in
Carey Frisch's other posts, and it tells me it is genuine.

Any way to "reload" 905474, or some other fix?

Thanks

Go to www.microsoft.com/genuine and revalidate. Reboot your computer after this is done.
Let us know us if this fixes the issue.
Sometimes revalidating and rebooting correctly syncs the Windows library files.

If not try this:

Please click start, then run, then type in "wgatray.exe /b" then press enter.
After that, log off and log back on.

If still no resolution, then:

Please follow this simple troubleshooting procedure:

1. Download and install the MGA Diagnostic Tool:
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=56062

2. After running the WGA Diagnostic Tool, click
on the "Validation" tab and then click on "Copy to Clipboard".

3. Next, visit the following website and create a post in the
"WGA Validation Problems" forum and paste the
results of the WGA Diagnostic Data in a detailed post.
http://forums.microsoft.com/Genuine/default.aspx?SiteID=25

4. A WGA troubleshooting specialist will analyze the data and
recommend an appropriate solution.

Carey,
You really should stop promoting spyware. It really is doing yourself
and other's no good.

WGA is not spyware...it is authentication-ware.
BTW, I help folks solve their problems rather
than whine about something as you tend to do.

Ahh
Whine you say. Very interesting. Will you ever comprehend that it is NOT
the responsibility of the O.P. to have to constantly go through this type of
harrassement.
And BTW ; have had this discussion with the LEAD of WGA and to the
contrary, no sufficient explanation has EVER been put forward as to the
methodology of KB905474 .
I am done with this issue, however; in parting I reiterate:
When did the onus of responsibilty fall to the end consumer to
CONSTANTLY "authenticate" their lease of "Genuine" software?
I truly wonder how you would feel if;for example;you had to "phone home"
to GM;Ford; whatever car you drive; to "authenticate" your purchase of said
"Genuine" vehicle whenever you needed to use it?
Again, I am through with this issue, and you may or may not like it.;
however facts are facts.

No, it's spyware by any reasonable person's definition.

OK, hot shot, how do we know that this spyware won't prevent us from
replacing a hard drive or flashing the BIOS? Do you know? Do you care?

As long as you indeed installed or reinstalled Windows XP using
a valid, genuine Product Key, it makes no difference if you should
replace your hard drive or flash the motherboard BIOS. WGA only
authenticates that a valid, genuine Windows XP Product Key is
being used.

Then why does it check all those things and not just check Windows?
