I got an auto update a few days ago from MS for this fix. When it installs it
doesn't then go away and periodically tries to reinstall. It has done this
many times. According to Control Panel/Add-Remove the fix is on the system so
it seems to install OK. Can anyone tell me how to get rid of it.

If not can anyone tell me how to tell MS that they have sent out a faulty
fix. I note from Googling the fix number that other people are having this
problem.

Hi,

If you have an OEM PV, follow these instructions from Eric Brodish of
Microsoft.

It worked for me.

The most common cause for this is that you have an OEM PC on which the PC
manufacturer imaged the kmixer.sys, wdmaud.sys and splitter.sys drivers as
unsigned. Update.exe will treat these drivers as OEM drivers and not
overwrite them. Please try the following:

1. Download the update from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...93a7-6a6c6a87be7f&displaylang=en&Hash=7LFJN64 and save to the C: drive

2. Click on the Start/Run

3. Type C:\WindowsXP-KB920872-x86-ENU.exe /o and click OK

You might want to post your question to the experts in the windows update
newsgroup. I have also including a link to a list of MS public newsgroups
for future reference.

I did try this and it didn't seem to work yesterday even when I rebooted the
PC after doing it - the update was still there. HOWEVER, today the update has
disappeared so don't know whether MS discovered the problem and obliterated
it or maybe it times out after a while or mayeb Eric's thing did work after a
while (unusual but possible).

Anyway thanks for replying to me.

The update now seems to have disappeared from my PC. Maybe it timed out or MS
realised it was causing problems and removed it. But thanks for the refs to
the newsgroups which I have logged for future reference.
