In Microsoft KB830336, instruction #10 says, "Drag
the .pst file information from your existing Outlook 2003
folders to the new .pst file that you created."

What is meant by the phrase ".pst file information"?
What is to be moved?

I dragged a folder from my existing Outlook 2003 inbox
into the new Outlook 97-2002 format Personal Folder and
tested an import into Outlook 97, but Outlook 97 said it
the file "was not a PST file", so taht does not work.

What I want to accomplish is move some Contacts from
Outlook 2003 to Outlook 97 and back again. A way to do
this is what I need. Thanks in advance.

Looks like you have created your data file in the new 2003 PST format which
cannot be read by any other version. You will need to create a new data
file that uses the 2000/XP PST format to be able to view in those versions.
I'm not even sure you can read 2000/XP PST versions in 97 since it used a
different store as well. That I will have to defer to another poster.

PST files are the data store that keeps all your mail, folder info and other
profile information for your account in Outlook.

Outlook 97 through 2002 use the exact same storage format. There is no
difference in 97 from the others, except for 2003.

To the OP, create your new .pst file (97-2002 format) and open it. Then
drag and drop the contents of your contacts folder from the 2003 contacts
folder to the 97-2002 .pst contacts folder. It may take bit to copy if you
have several hundred or thousands of contacts. Then, save the 97-2002 .pst
file to a floppy or another storage medium (USB sticks are good for this, or
an iPod) and then copy it to the other computer. Ensure that the file is
not read-only, and then open it in Outlook 97 using File->Open->Personal
Folders File.

the (insert latest virus name here) virus, all mail sent to my personal
account will be deleted without reading.
