HI

I have just bought a GR-D270EK camcorder I have also installed a firewire
board and lead but can't download my movies to my computer.
Does anybody know what else I have to do to download the movies

Go through the manual.
If you still face problem then ask here:-

You should already have in XP "Windows Movie Maker" installed; Google
for "Windows Media Encoder" which should sort out the codecs
[programmes] for you.
