Hey all

Ok so I started fresh with a new HD and installed Windows XP Pro SP2.
Not I can only work in 8 bit screen res, or my monitor shuts off! And
sometimes the comp even reboots on me!

I am using a brand new Radeon 9550 and I have installed all of the new
drivers from their website.

Thanks

Uninstall the driver, reboot - download the latest Chipset driver
package for your specific motherboard. Install that and then do
the latest Catalyst driver from ATI.

I've seen this one many times, ATI's Radeon 9000 series drivers are
problematic. This is _one_ case where the Microsoft supplied driver
works better. Uninstall the ATI driver and let Windows install it's driver.

It sounds like you have the resolution set too high for your monitor.
How old is the monitor? Try a resolution of 1024x768 with 32-bit color
to see what happens.

Ok i am gonna try this. Do I have to open my comp to find out what
mother board i am using?

Ok so how about this. Everytime I change the bits or screen resolution
it says

"VPU has has reset your graphics accelerator....."

Does this help ???

Have you confirmed that the proper monitor drivers are installed?

Right click a blank part of the desktop and select properties. Go to
Settings->Advanced->Monitor. If the M70 monitor is not listed, click
Properties->Driver->Update Driver and work your way through the dialogs.

I had a similar problem in Win98 and a monitor of the same era. To solve
the problem I had to disable the function "automatically detect Plug and
Play monitors" I can not find a similar setting in XP but suspect the base
problem is the same--the wrong driver for the monitor is being loaded.

I have also found this bit of additional detail while Googling:

<quote>
XP natively has Monitor definitions for the M70. Just update your
driver, but not automatically select. Uncheck "Show compatible
Hardware", select HP for vendor - then scroll through list M70 is
shown near the end of the listings.

Actually it sounds like the Refresh rate is being set too high for the
monitor and it is shutting itself down to protect itself.

Ok how do I change that??

Right click your Desktop/Properties/Settings/Advanced Button/Monitor.
Change it to 60 hertz if LCD monitor and 75 hertz if CRT monitor and see
if that helps. Also, just curious, what is it set to now?
