.... found Outlook to be a cumbersome mess. While I like the integrated
calendar and address book, the options are daunting, confusing and in some
cases poorly labeled. Several things I need help with and I'll start with
the first three:
1) how do you integrate newgroups? I don't see any options at all. On OE
my newgroups are a folder just like my Inbox.
2) I have selected "complete names" to autofill when I am typing in a
recipient but it seems to only work if I have previously (at least done it
once) typed the full name in even though the email address is already in the
address book.
3) why can't I view a jpg in the navigation pane? I could in OE.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Daunting and confusing, I can understand. There's always a learning curve.
What do you find poorly labeled?

Outlook doesn't read news - it launches OE for news even if you try to
launch news from within Outlook. There are some newish add-ins for this if
you really want to try them, but personally, I prefer to keep things
separate. I don't use OE for mail, only for news.
2) I have selected "complete names" to autofill when I am typing in a

Yes, and autocomplete in Outlook 2002/2003 doesn't look up anything in your
address book - it relies only on what you've entered previously. Prior
versions of Outlook didn't even *have* autocomplete, by the way.
3) why can't I view a jpg in the navigation pane? I could in OE.

Because Outlook is a totally different program. :) Again, I think there may
be an addin for this but I don't remember it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Outlook isn't OE, and vice versa. Outlook was originally geared towards a
corporate environment and is still most widely used in same - for reasons of
security and usability, the issues you raise are not available natively.
Imagine if autocomplete *did* perform address book lookups - in a 20,000
user environment with Exchange & multiple contacts folders? It would be a
nightmare. Also, I think most admins wouldn't want corporate mail users
accessing public newsgroups in their mail clients. Re attachments in the
message body - well, I have no real answer on that one, honestly.

I do think once you get used to the additional features in Outlook, you'll
be sold. It does *way* more than OE does and is truly the 'killer app' for
most people.

.
1. Continue to use Outlook Express for Newsgroups.
2. That's the way it is.
3. Outlook does not display attached images inline. Outlook
is a business application while Outlook Express is targeted
toward consumers. Business administrators consider inline
display a security issue.
