When I use the Device Manager's Driver Tab to update a driver via the
Hardware Update Wizard, does XP use the default browser search for a driver.
My default browser is Firefox. I that is the case, should I make IE the
default before running the Wizard.

Thank you very much.

It isn't using a browser at all...it's just searching.

If you want a proper driver then don't use Windows update function.
Doing so will only get you a generic driver from Microsoft repository.

You should always go to the manufacturers website for specific drivers
for your devices.

As to default browser, 96% of people use IE6 so it is up to you what you
want. IE6 updates are automatic and this is what people go for in the
current high rate of spyware/viruses attacking the systems.
Antivirus/anti-spyware prorams can proptect you but there is no harm to
protect the OS first. IE6 is part of OS.

Depends on where you get your statistics. echoecho.com says differently ;-)

Jack, it's best not to get driver updates from Microsoft. In the first
place don't update drivers unless there is a need - either there is a
problem the new driver will resolve or it has a new feature that is a
must have. If a new driver is needed go to the device manufacturer's
website if it's a retail device, the computer OEM's website for OEM
systems like Dell, HP, etc. or the motherboard manufacturer's website
for integrated devices.

I agree completely, but I didn't read the OP's question as involving Windows
Update at all, but was about the wizard one sees when trying to update a
driver in Device Manager (in which case it's searching the file
system)....perhaps I misunderstood.

No I think you read it right. I misread it...lol

What exactly is the correct figure by your reckoning? Are you saying 4%
don't use IE6?

Go to echoecho.com and see their stats.
You can pull figures out of your butt all you want. It just depends on
where you get them.

If you have the figures ready then post them here. I don't have time to
visit any other site. I know that IE is the dominannt browser. PERIOD.
Whether 99% use it or 96% use it. It is well above 50%.

You may not like it but this is life.

End from me on this this for now.

Which is the only one (almost) guaranteed to work. If you want to download
some spyware-infested, trojanized, malicious and just plain defective driver
from a Chinese hardware manufacturer, well, good luck.

I looked. It's 89% for IE, but that has statistical clustering all over it.

NOT CORRECT. If you go to the website of the manufacturer, you are not
likely to get "some spyware-infested, trojanized, malicious and just
plain defective driver". If this was the case then you have made the
mistake of buying the PC from that manufacturer.

ROFLMAO. You are so special.

Thanks Ronie. I only wanted to make the point that IE is the dominant
browser. I never tried to compare IE with any other browser because
people's likes and dislikes are invariably different.

No. Hardware manufacturers are responsible for drivers.
If you want to
download some spyware-infested, trojanized, malicious and just plain
defective driver from a Chinese hardware manufacturer, well, good
luck.

If you have an Intel NIC, you go to Intel's support pages and download the
driver. If you have an Adaptec SCSI controller, you go to Adaptec's support
pages and download the driver. Etc. Etc. Ad nauseum.
