Hi,

I have upgraded to Outlook 2003 from Outlook XP a couple of weeks ago. At
first, I thought that the junk filter was good. Well, that was after a few
hours of using OL.

Now, after a couple of weeks and an average of 150 messages per day (of
which more than 80% is junk), I can tell that the junk filter does a VERY
poor job! I used to use PopFile and I was able to get a success rate of 99%.
I am definitely very far from that figure with OL 2k3.

I tried the low level setting (i.e. the default). Needless to say that
(apart from no automatic filtering), it's the worst setting. I then decided
to go for high filtering. It was better, but still very bad. I then decided
for the safe lists only solution. Well, I am still not satisfied even with
that drastic solution.

I indeed happen to have rules that put mails (that I get from various POP3
accounts) into different folders. Well, surprise surprise, OL 2k3 has been
so well tested that they haven't realised that OL 2k3 first filters junk and
then applies the rules. In other words, some of the mail I receive is
(rightly) considered as junk, but is then moved into a particular folder
(respecting the rules I have set up). Needless to say that it makes the junk
filtering completely useless!

Another issue is that using the safe lists solution, one can also assimilate
any e-mail coming from a contact as safe, which I did. Yet, I noticed that
it's not always the case. I received an e-mail from someone in my contacts
list, and it got classified as junk. I had to put that contact in my safe
list to circumvert the problem (!).

Last, but not least, Microsoft claim OL 2k3's junk filtering system to be
top notch. Well, top notch for me would be using baysian algorithm. As far
as I can tell, there is no such think in OL 2k3. There is no way to "teach"
the algorithm how to properly detect junk.

Well, I decided to upgrade to OL 2k3 following all the hype about the junk
filtering system. I start wondering whether it was a wise move... I do
really like some of OL 2k3 features, but this one surely s***s big time!

Sorry for the rant, but I really feel like I have been wasting my time with
OL 2k3. I guess I should have waited for SP1. When is it due by the way? No,
seriously, when is it due?!

Alan.

I didn't realize exactly what was screwed up in my system until after I
read a half dozen emails like yours!! I'm have the same problem and I'm
surprised there are thousands of similar emails. WTF Microsoft?? When
are these BASIC problems going to get fixed!!??
