Only include your email address in this newsgroup if you
wnat tons of junk mail and emails with old viruses that
have been detected for years, such as "exploit-mime."
Surely other people who have used this newsgroup have
experienced this. Surely some one could have found out
who is sending them and stop them?

I think you may have forgotten whos newsgroup you are
on... i should have thought twice before I posted my e-
mail. but thanks to this newsgroup and its lack of care
about its users I can look forward to lots of fresh junk
mail every day. Maybe thats the kind of reason the entire
world is losing interest in it. i dunno maybe its just
me...... Thanx again.

Wrong, Microsoft has no way of preventing email addresses from being
harvested, that's done by bots that scan every newsgroup every day.

Let's rephrase the above correctly, "thanks to me and my lack of
precautions I can look forward to lots of fresh junk mail every day".

Don't blame someone else for what you did.

I agree.
Email, email addresses, chat, IRC and much more ways to
communicate over the internet are AS secure as sending someone a
postcard.
The contents can easily be read by everyone with enough
knowledge, email addresses are as private as like they are
advertised during CNN's primetime.
Get your self a freeware network sniffer, and watch your network
traffic (even more fun is to monitor you company LAN) and be
supprised what "read-able" information goes accros the network.
So, take precautions, like we have learned some basic
precautions to secure our house and our car.
There is no way to securely share your secrets over the
internet.
If you are quick enough you can trace back this news message and
find me, sitting at the other end of some network cable, typing
a next message.

Greetings --

It's been well known for years now that posting/publishing a real
email address to _any_ newsgroup or web site is an open initiation to
be spammed. For years now, spammers have been using automated tools
to harvest email addresses from Usenet. What I don't understand is
why you're just now noticing the phenomenon.

You're receiving these emails because your email address is in
the address book of someone infected with a worm, and/or because _you_
posted your real email address somewhere on-line, either in a forum
accessible to the public and spambots, such as Usenet, or on an
untrustworthy web site that subsequently sold your address as part of
a mailing list.
