We are using Outlook 2003 with both Windows 2000 and XP operating systems.

We are looking at turning on the Junk E-mail Filter at user workstations to
remove the spam that manages to get through the spam blocker that is used to
filter our company's incoming mail.

Two questions: 1) Am I correct in stating that Cached Exchange Mode must be
enabled for the Junk E-Mail Filter to work? and 2) what are the ramifications
of switching to cached exchange mode?

first, yes you need to enable cached exchange mode for it to work
second, i'm not sure of your environment, but if you have users with roaming
profiles, that is the only real disadvantage to cached exchange mode. this
is because it creates a local copy of your mailbox in your profile
(documents and settings\%username%\local settings\application
data\microsoft\outlook\outlook.ost) so if a person has a mailbox that is
3gb, there will be a 3gb ost in that folder. if they have a roaming profile,
go for coffee break while you wait to login ;)

Also, the Microsoft Outlook web site says you need Exchange 2003 as well,
but it seems to work for Exchange 2000, at least for us.
