jpg's, bmp's & tiffs now all represented by the same icons

I'm sure this didn't happen all by itself, but for the life of me I can't
remember what I'd done to change display properties in these files, and
would like to restore them.

Have changed Folders Options to see all hidden file types, done the
CLEANMGR.EXE and am always dumping Temporary Internet Files,
even changed to/from/back to 32-16 bits on monitor color depth (with
re-boots).

A full Norton AV scan follows AdAware and Spybot scours
once a week as well, so I doubt there are any unwanted nasties at work.
My dilemma is that the files (bmp's, tiff's and jpg's) in question are all
represented by the *same icon*. Unless the cursor is rested on them or their
Properties opened I've no way of determining exactly what type of image file
they are.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Did you recently install a program that views or edits picture files? It
may have taken over the assocations. What program starts when you
double-click a picture file? I'm not sure how you would restore the
association. Anyone....anyone....?

Another thing you can do is change a setting in Windows Explorer so that you
can see file extensions. Go to Tools, Folder Options, View tab, and uncheck
the box next to 'Hide extensions for known file types'. I hate that
setting, I don't know why Microsoft hides extensions by default since it
confuses users and makes it difficult to figure out what kind of file you're
looking at. I can't memorize all the icons on my system!

Anyway, hope that helps. :o)
