.jpg "no preview available"--but ONLY from desktop

When I attempt to look at a .jpg image saved to the
desktop, Windows Picture & Fax viewer opens, then
displays a message "No preview available" with nothing in
the title bar.

The very same files, saved to any other folder, display
normally when clicked, with the filename and "Windows
Picture and Fax Viewer" in the title bar.

I have changed *no* settings on the desktop recently, and
this behavior is new (WinXP system that has been running
fine for 1+ years).

John--thank you for the suggestion--didn't work in this
case. The files in question are just regular,
uncompressed .jpgs from a digital camera. I'd sure
appreciate any additional insight you or anyone else
could provide!
