I can't convert to .mp3 format? Is that a limitation of the free version?
If so I can't imagine why this software is as popular as it would seem on
download.com. That's a rather basic feature to have deactivated unless you
pay. Are people using this software primarily as a player?

You can do it with Switch
Converts a variety of different audio file formats including wav, mp3, ogg,
flac, aac, wma, au, aiff, ogg, msv, dvf, vox, atrac, gsm, dss and other
formats into mp3 or wav.
