Jave Update or Windows Installer problem?

I get a bubble pop-up that states that the Java platform
needs to be updated. But it seems to get stuck in the
Windows Installer ("preparing to install"). When I look
at system performance, I see no unusual CPU activity and
no network activity. I have no idea what might be going
on. I have waited several minutes, to no avail.

Any idea what might be going wrong, if anything and how
to remedy it myself? Or is this "normal" and I simply have
to be more "patient" (argh!)?

Any idea whom I should contact for support: Sun,
Microsoft, my computer manufacturer, ...?

PS ....

When I abort the task, I find the msiexec.exe is non-responding.
I guess that should not be surprising, since that is the Windows
Installer service.

Moreover, when I choose to send an error report to MS, even
that seems to get stuck in the "preparing error report" step.

At least, that step is check-marked. Perhaps it is stuck in the
next step, which is something like "connecting to server".

A network problem would make some sense to me. But I
hasten to note that I am using the network now on the same
computer, and I was using the network successfully while I
was stuck in the Windows Installer earlier.

Of course, it could simply be a problem on the remote side.
But I encountered the Java update problem every time I tried
-- several times during the past 3 days. And it seems like a
surprising coincidence to encounter an MS server problem
at the same time -- unless, of course, the Java update and
MS error report try to connect the same server. I doubt it!

Hi Joe:

Just a thought - - do you have a firewall that is preventing the Java
update from connecting to the internet?

Good luck,

Good thought. The same thought occurred to me after I
posted the question. I do use NIS, and I have had problems
before with it being over-protective. So I disabled the NIS
firewall and enabled Windows Firewall. The problem remains.

I could try disabling even Windows Firewall. But in my
experience, it has never been a problem. I will consider it
as a last resort -- which I am getting very close to trying :-(.

I will also try running Ethereal during the installation to see if
anything goes out unanswered.

Some follow-up points ....

First, how do I run "java update" (I think it is the Java Plug-in
Console) directly, instead of waiting for an update/install
reminder bubble?

According to a web page, there should be an icon on my
toolbar. I don't see one -- except sometime after I initially
log-in (because I have set an option to be notified). I disabled
"hide inactive tasks", but the Java Update icon does not appear.
When I did a file search for "java", I do not see anything that
was obviously the Jave Control Console. But then again, it was
difficult to see the forest for the trees (too many hits).

Second, I should have said that I am running Win XP Pro 2002
SP2. I would like to tell you the Java Environment revision --
but, sigh, I don't think I can unless I can figure how to run the
Java Control Console directly (my question above).

The update message is from Sun.

The problem may be with the Windows Installer. Try the following:

Thanks. Both look promising. If I do the clean-up, I think I
will need instruction on how to subsequently re-install the
Java environment. Any preemptive help would be appreciated.
Thanks again.
