I THINK I have Java downloaded from Sun.

I have a Java Program file of about 30 MB on my machine (a Dell GXT110, PIII
733mhz, under WindowsXP Pro).

What do I need to do to enable this Java?

Appreciate your advices.

Thank you,

Nels

Jim:

I'm not sure, it was several months ago. Java is not shown under Add/Remove
Programs or I would just uninstall it and start over. Don't want to delete
files willy-nilly and foul something up.

In reviewing the list of Java files in Search, I cannot find one that
appears like it would install the Java I have, so..., I am up in the air
about what to do.

Any help you are able to give will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Nels

Hi Nels - OK, we'll try it another way. Open Windows Explorer and look in
Program Files and see if you have a folder named Java. For example, if you
have the Sun Java Runtimes installed, you should have in that Java folder
another folder named J2re1.4.2 which, in turn, has some sub-folders and a
bunch of files (mostly licenses at the top level folder :) ) The total
size of that J2re1.4.2 folder will be about 34MB. If you don't have that,
post back with the names of any folders and/or programs that are listed
there. If you have all that, then look in Settings|Control Panel and see if
you have a Java applet called Java Plug-in. If so, double click to open it,
then click either the Default or the J2re entry in the dropdown in the
Advanced tab, and Microsoft Internet Explorer in the Browser tab. Now in
IE6|Tools|Internet Options|Advanced, check the box under Java (Sun) that
says "Use Java 2 . . . .", then close all instances of IE6 and re-open. Now
you can test whether Sun Java is working on your machine at the following
sites:

http://www.pocoso.de/pocoso052.html
http://www.clan.lib.ri.us/clan/javatest.html
http://www.fitwise.com/testjava.asp (both 1.0 and 1.1 and what's
installed)
http://coglab.wadsworth.com/support/browsercheck.html
http://www.ces.clemson.edu/webct/browser_detect.html

and you can test Javascript here:
http://www.dancespots.net/browsertest.htm

and check whether you have the MS VM installed and which version here:
http://www.visualware.com/support/javasupport.html

If you also want to install the Microsoft Java VM, post back and I'll give
you instructions for that, also.

Hi, Jim:

Thank you for this.

Yes, Java folder in Program Files
For example, if you
have the Sun Java Runtimes installed,

I can't see any Runtimes (or I don't know what I'm looking for).

No, I see only J2re1.4.1_01, about 29MB
which, in turn, has some sub-folders and a
bunch of files (mostly licenses at the top level folder :) ) The total
size of that J2re1.4.2 folder will be about 34MB. If you don't have that,
post back with the names of any folders and/or programs that are listed

bin, lib, changes, copywrite, javaws-1_2_0_1-windows-i586-i.exe, LICENSE,
README.txt, Welcome.html

No Java Plug-in.

No Java programs listed on the Advanced Tab

Presume I am missing some files. Is there a way to resucitate my Java?

Sure appreciate your help!!!

Nels

Well, Jim, you are working late tonight!

I'll follow these instructions tomorrow and let you know how I come out.

Really do appreciate your time and trouble to help me.

Good morning, Jim:

Before following your instructions I wanted to find out if I must
uninstall/delete any of the old Sun Java files on my machine, or will the
new download overwrite what is already on there? If I should get rid of the
old, what is the best way to do this when Java does not appear in Add/Remove
Programs?

Again, thank you for your help.

Nels

Hi Nels - No, just let Sun do an "over install". If it needs to remove
them, it will probably detect that they're there and do so automatically.
If not, then - no harm, no foul.

Jim, you deserve more than thanks! It seems to work fine. Truly appreciate
the trouble you have gone to to help me!
