java virtual machine

when i was trying to play a game on yahoo,it wouldnt load ,it said that i needed a java virtual machine.
it then said that i could down load it.when i started to down load it microsofts web page came on and told me that
i could not veiw the page because i did not have ajava virtual machine.i down loaded one from web page ,but when i tried again the same thing happened.
can anybody help me out.
