Java Question

I am running XP Pro with SP2 installed. I went to MicroTrend's online
viruis scan. When I attempted to scan I was told that I would have to
download and install Sun's Java. I was under the impression that I was
running Microsofts's Java. I think it is called Java VM. Correct me if I am
confused. I have heard that Microsoft's Java is no longer supported. In
order to download and install Sun's version of Java what must I do?

Thank for for any suggestions,

Ken A.

Thak you for the link to DL Java. What I need to know is: Do I have to
uninstall something (Java VM) before I install Sun's Java?

I was under the impression the that MS java came already installed on XP
/SP2. Does it?? I never really gave it much thought until I went to
MicroTrend's site for an online virus scan. When I clicked On "Scan for
Virus" a Box came up and said that in order for the scan I would have to dl
Sun's Java. My question is; Should I download and install Sun's Java and if
I do are there any adverse things that could happen to my machine?
I appreciate any comments on this.

Thanks for any help,

Ken A.

No, MS Java does not come installed on SP2. It's no longer available or
supported by MS.

Some OEMs put Sun Java on, some don't put any Java on.

Sun Java is now the norm.

No

Yes because Sun developed it and they took the rights away from Microsoft to
implement it because Microsoft was turning it into a proprietary piece of
their property. Sun sued them and won. So now Microsoft resorted to .NET
in response and no longer can msjvm be downloaded from their site. It is
still available on the NET and Microsoft still releases security fixes for
it.

Yes d/l and install it or you will not have java capabilities.
No not really it is a layer that should not interfere in any way. You may
get nags but they are easily ignored.

Thank you George Hester and other posters for taking the time to answer my
questions regarding Java. I will now download and install Sun's Java.

Thanks,
Ken A
