A huge amount of web pages use the java plugin to display "nice effects"
such as animated menus, roleover effects etc. Microsoft used to have their
own java plugin (JavaVM) but it has now been replaced with the Java plugin
that you see (legal reasons I think)
If you go to a web site that use Java applets, then you need it. If
you do that and you don't have a Java Virtual Machine, you'll be told
that you need it to see the page properly. If you never visit such
sites, then you won't need a JVM.
