Java on Win XP

Is there currently any quick fix for enabling Java on computers with Windows
XP (Home, SP2)?

How discouraging that one pays a fortune for the "latest and greatest"
Windows, and the damned thing won't load many popular web sites properly.
This failing should be extensively advertised. Bill Gates is a thug.

What makes you think "Java" is broken or disabled?

What Norton or McAfee applications might you be running?

What failing? MS can no longer include it's JVM after loosing the
lawsuit with Sun. Install Java from
http://java.sun.com/getjava/download.html. Maybe you need to relax a
bit eh?

Yes install Java.

Since Java is not created by Microsoft and since Sun do not like Microsoft
distributing their own version with Windows, Sun took Microsoft to court in
order to force you to install it yourself. Complete with extra bloat.

Okay. That's the site where I landed and have been downloading for the last
15 minutes or so. I wanted to check that this was the best fix.

I am wondering whether I wasted money on XP. I don't see any advantages
compared to my old manufacturer's edition of Win ME.

Bear, the reports I am getting from certain web sites, and the chatter on
Usenet on this subject are what suggest to me that Win XP SP2 does not have
Java capability.

Microsoft ought to state up front that Win XP will do abc, whereas it will
not do xyz, in comparison to previous versions of Windows. Totally
misleading advertising.

When Windows XP just keeps running for weeks and weeks without a reboot
you'll see the advantage. 8-)

Why would Microsoft state "upfront" that XP doesn't come with Sun's Java?
XP also doesn't come with AOL's Instant Messenger out of the box, nor does
it come with Symantec's AntiVirus. Most egregious of all, it doesn't come
with a hex editor!!!

I am a big fan of Windows ME and you're going to love Windows XP SP2. The
System Restore function actually works, for starters.

As the result of a well-publicized lawsuit by Sun Microsystems, and
the ensuing settlement, Microsoft was not allowed to provide its own
Java Virtual Machine to Windows XP users. You can get almost the same
functionality by downloading Sun's version of Java from
http://java.sun.com/getjava/index.html. If you want the wider website
compatibility of Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine, it is still available
from a lot of 3rd-party web sites, one of which is here:
http://www.virtualmachine.tk/.

If you do choose the Microsoft JVM, be sure to apply a needed
security patch.

Microsoft Security Bulletin MS03-011

(Prevents the Trojan.ByteVerify issue)

Patch available here:

Why should Microsoft "state up front" that it doesn't ship another
company's product with its own? That's an obvious thing to most people.

Totally
misleading advertising.

And just where did you see an advertisement for WinXP that stated that
it comes with Java?

Paul and Vagabond: All right. I will keep the faith.

The download and installation of the Java software from java.com took 45
minutes or so (using a modem connection, of course) but it's now up and
working. I am able to pull up the web site that would not come up before.

Thanks to all of you who post regularly here and help folks. I will try to
return the favor in areas where I have something to offer.

I hope someone can help me? I have been trying to install yahoo sitebuilder
(because front page seems too daunting) and Java won't load. The yahoo person
says it is either an internal security problem, or the java control settings.
I have a hunch that it is a security issue because I have difficulty printing
labels on the pritney-bowes/paypal site. please offer some advice!

Some things in life are self-evident. Your Prius will not tote five tons of
sand. I cannot dance (although I CAN lick my eyebrows which makes me
extremely popular with the ladies).

XP doesn't do everything (yet).

XP does not include Adobe Photoshop, Intuit's Quickbooks, Computer-Assisted
Design software or millions of other applications. XP doesn't even include
Microsoft Word, Excel, or Exchange Server 2003. For a few thousand dollars,
however, you CAN add Microsoft's Customer Relations Manager.

Java is a programming tool. XP likewise does not include Java or Visual
Basic, COBOL, Perl, Fortran, PL/I, nor any other programming tool nor their
runtime programs. It is interesting to note that Microsoft TRIED to include
Java, but the evil Sun company prevented it.

You want stuff like that, you've got to get it on your own. Do you have
anything that need licking?
