I just got a new system w/xp Pro and when I tried to
update a s/w app that uses java to do this I got a window
that popped up (i'm not sure what app) saying that an app
was trying to access the internet I made a huge mistake
and said "Never allow this" as it was the default option
in the drop down box. Any clue how I reverse this?

That would have been your firewall.

What you need to do depends on what firewall you are using, post back
with the name of your firewall and somebody else who uses it will come
up with an answer.

I'm not sure how to answer so could be doing this wrong. because i am having problems with xp firewall i have been looking at this area. i think you might need to go to the firewall and and remove the thing you want to access from the exceptions list. i'm a bit of a computer dubo but that i think is worth looking at/
