After installing Windows 2000, we have to type in "Net Start Spooler" after each reboot to gain access to our printers local and shared.

Is there a question in this or do you just like receiving the Swen worm ?

The question is how do I get around this? You are indicating that I have a virus. Is that correct

Thank you,

No I did not say you have a virus. I do state that you WILL get the virus (it will be sent
via email) because you posted your real email address, not munged, in a UseNet group that is
targeted by the Swen worm which harvests email addresses from UseNet.

If you had a question in the original post, you should have stated it thusly.

You need to make sure the Spooler Service is to start automatically upon system bootup.

Hi

I don't think the Swen worm looks in the subject field for e-mail addresses...

On the contrary. It does.

Hi

Then you now something that F-Secure Anti-Virus don't know, from
http://www.f-secure.com/v-descs/swen.shtml:

<quote>
The worm also can search for e-mail addresses in various newsgroups. It connects to NNTP
servers listed in the SWEN1.DAT file, gets a list of all newsgroups on that server and searches
recent messages in these newsgroups for 'nfrom:' and 'nreply-to:' tags. When such tags are
found, the worm gets e-mail addressed after them and writes them to the GERMS0.DBV file. This
way the worm can harvers a lot of e-mail addresses to send itself to.
</quote>

I'll tell you how you can prove or disprove this like others I know have done.

Create an email address put in the subject and post to microsoft.public.security.virus (a
highly targeted location) and wait.

I don't ahve the virus and I didn't get it. I am having a problem not on my system but on another system running WIN2000

When I try to add a printer the message Print Subsystem Unavailable Pops Up. You need to type in at the command prompt "Net Start Spooler" This has to be done everytime we boot. How can we get around this problem? I can't start a service that don't exist other then manually typing it in.

If the spooler service did not exist how could you start it within a command prompt using
the "net start " command ?

Go to Administrative Tools in the Control Panel and make sure the spooler service starts
automatically when the system starts.

(I suggested this at 8:50pm)

There is no virus here, you may have one, I don't. If I was looking for a solution to viruses I certainly would not come here. That wouldn't make any sense, would it? If you are going to email someone a virus, especially now adays good luck. I suggest you take your silly conversation about viruses off line, where you can impress yourself. At the current time we are having a technical issue that does not involve anything you are talking about. I deeply apoligize for confusing you by adding my email in the subject line, that was not my intent. Have a nice day.

Hi

And now jagaman is asking to be targeted by the swen worm on purpose I think ;-)

From a post in the microsoft.public.windowsxp.general newsgroup:

From: "jagaman" <[email protected]>
Sender: "jagaman" <[email protected]>
Subject: (e-mail address removed)
Date: Sun, 23 Nov 2003 20:03:05 -0800
Message-ID: <[email protected]>

where the content/body of the post is this only:
(e-mail address removed)

There are no plans on us being targeted for any virus. On the contray, our servers [Novell] are quite secure, and our workstations running WIN XP & WIN 2000 access the internet via our LAN router. We have a firewall on each workstation and Email scanning.

Now that we have the print spooler started in our service you guys should be ashamed if you call your conversation tech support. This industry needs bright minds and I'm sure you have one, so lets put it to better use in the future

Thanks

(e-mail address removed)

target me baby, there are repercussions.

Why are you posting this crap here? It makes no sense whatsoever.

You know, you really should take your medication as the nice doctor advises.

Again there is no Virus here said:
