I am very new to Windows XP. I found a screen which had a long list of
default boxes for appearance ticked. I unticked the default box and checked
custom. Now my settings and icons have all changed and I can't find the
original screen to change back to default. I can't use System Restore or
I'll lose all of my drivers, internet settings etc. I put on today! Also
when I page down or up on the right hand arrows the page lazily goes up and
down in waves! I just want it to zoom straight up and down. How can I
change this?

Rightclick center of screen>Properties>Desktop tab>Customize Desktop>
Restore Default.
Click the cursor above or below the slider to make it "zoom" up or down.

This might be what you're looking for:

Go to Start -> Control Panel -> System.
In System Properties select the Advanced tab.
In the Performance box click on Settings.
On the Visual Effects page select "Let Windows choose what's best
for my computer".
