start, run, type msconfig. Select startup tab and look for that
process. Uncheck it and select apply and ok and it'll stop it from
loading up when you boot the PC.

Thanks for that. What about ipodservice.exe? That's not listed in
msconfig. It's another process that always seems to be running.

Also next time you reboot your PC it will come up with a message
saying you are using selective startup...Just click never show this
message again and you'll be sorted.

It is there so that when you plug your iPod in, iTunes will open
automatically.

If you don't want any of that running, why do you even have an iPod?

Hi Richard,

Do you have an iPod? If not, remove all the iTunes junk. Google search
for autoruns. Install it and go through and uncheck the items related
to it. If you don't have an iPod you don't need any of the junk.
Reboot and if everything works well after a week, go back into Autoruns
and right click on the disabled items and select Delete. Every time you
update iTunes you'll have to do it again.

At that point I'd suggest a different player. I still use an old
version of Winamp that works fine for my audio/video needs.

I have the latest registered version of Winamp, and iTunes is far
superior as a music library manager.

It depends on what you need. I use version 2 of Winamp to stick all my
mp3s into a playlist and that is all I need and all I ever use.

It's more about what I _want_ than what I need. iTunes is an
absolutely fantastic music library manager.

I don't agree with that. There are several audio file formats that are
important to me that iTunes can't handle. It's also a memory hog, and
quite intrusive to the system. I also find the interface to be
limiting. The only thing I think iTunes is particularly good at is
playing Podcasts.

Winamp is OK, but I like the Media Library in Foobar2000 better.

I had the same problem when my daughter wanted Itunes on my PC. She used it once
or twice a week but for the rest of the time it still part loaded on bootup,
uselessly using resources.
Mind you, I find almost all programs, whether free or purchased, want to do the
same these days. It wasn't until I wanted to kill itunes bootup processes that I
discovered how many.
I finally came across Sysinternals "Autoruns" free program and have found it
easy to use and fully effective.

Go to http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/default.aspx
and look for it under "Top 10 downloads"

cheers

I personally think it's a POS, but that's my opinion. Who needs a music
player that installs all the crap iTunes does. And if apps are installed
on a different partition than C: (all mine are on E:), the installer
allows iTunes to install to a different partition, but then everything
else is installed to C:.

If a person doesn't have an iPod, there are a LOT of alternatives. Like
I said, Winamp is small, does the job, and it doesn't need to be
reinstalled. It's one of those apps that are all contained in their own
folder. No files thrown all over the system or a bazillion registry
entries. But I use version 5.24, so newer versions may not be the same.

I have seen far too many issues with iTunes on client machines and
workstations. And when Apple decided to sneak in Safari in, that was it
for me. I try to get users to try alternative players.
