My computer now gives me messages the spyware has infected my system. I
installed anti-spyware & was able to get rid of some, but after a while it
stops and freezes. I have to cut the power to shut down. the thing that makes
me panic is that when I try to get into the task manager to see what's going
on, I get a message that I don't have permission from the administrator to
use it. This is a non network home system.
Like most people, I would like to recover without losing files

Hi

Try searching for any spyware you may have on your system:

Spybot - http://www.safer-networking.org/
CWShredder - http://aumha.org/downloads/cwshredder.zip
Spy Sweeper - www.webroot.com
Ad-Aware - www.lavasoftusa.com

Try SpyWareBlaster to stop intrusions:

Also see the following links:

http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

Also run a virus-check on your system with the latest definitions for your
anti virus program.

I'm using spy sweeper & after it detects one (think it's xjunitper) it tries
to shut down & it freezes.

OK. What about the other 3 antispyware programs listed.

No ONE AS program alone will work on ALL spyware.

Also, the anti-spyware scans should absolutely be done in safe mode. Did
you do it that way ?

Make sure you have a full and complete backup of important data. More
than one anti-malware program is needed, and they should be run in safe
mode. Here are some links for good info on removing malware:

Go through these general malware removal steps systematically -
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

Do all prep/finishing work and follow instructions to do all scans in
Safe Mode.

Then run these specific removal tools:

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting
this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a professional
computer repair shop (not your local version of BigStoreUSA).
