I am encountering problems opening some files over a network share. Keyword:
Some. Others open OK.

Simple network. 2 Machines, XP Home, SP2, No firewalls on either.

If I copy the files to the other machine and have that machine provide the
share it works OK.

Observations:

Like described in KB 822227 and KB 328170

Exe files that do not open have a different icon (like it is not reading the
header correctly.) Some EXEs in the same remote folder open fine. I cannot
copy the EXE that will not open to the local drive but can for the ones that
will open.

Cannot get any WP documents in the share to open. Nor can I copy them

Again, no firewalls(for testing), no anti-virus (for testing). Bothe
machines XP Home SP2. All shares allow for remote users to change files.
All users are Adminatrator.

I cannot copy those files I cannot open from the share to the local drive.

All wiring is good.

I am trying a 3rd machine today.

I need HELP! I have never seen anything like this before!

I used an XP Pro SP 2 machine to access the same share and had the same
problems. I have screen shots of the error messages and what the icons look
like. I really could use some input here.

Is Hotfix 885250 part of your update history? That hotfix has been known to
cause miscellaneous symptoms like yours.

If that's not the issue, then check the permissioning for the individual files.
You'll need to disable Simple File Sharing, which isn't a normal procedure
under XP Home.

OK, I am on to you. I will give that a try tomorrow. I have an XP Pro
machine running and I see what you are talking about. I can boot to safe
w/network, disable it and look at the permissions on the trouble files. If
indeed they are messed up and I can correct them, will they stay correct once
I reroot?

The situation of ACL corruption is a pretty obscure one on its own, and with XP
Home, even more so. We've been prescribing the XP Home Safe Boot resolution
only a few months; before that, it was a matter of delete and recreate shares,
or unload and reload file sharing.

What causes the problem, and what the long term prognosis is, we have to learn
from cases like yours. If indeed your inconsistent behaviour is related to the
ACL. This is where we're hoping to learn from your experience.

I'm presuming that, for a given share, it is properly accessible, or not, over
time? No mysterious changes in accessibility?

Yipee! I used CACLS (DOS COMMAND) to set the rights on all the shares and
all is wonderful. Thank you for your help.

Summary of the simple command.

cd\<share name>
cacls *.* /t /g EVERYONE:F
