I have a Win 2000 laptop with a problem. I am trying inunistall software
(i.e. itunes) and when I use the remove program file it just locks up the
mshta program. I have to open task.exe to quit the uninstaller mshta
program. Anybody know where I would find an answer.

ps I applied Sp 4 applied a long time ago. I have added about 15gb of
programs and data sinse then.

maybe re-applying the sp4 would work???

Thanks,

Jack

You have yourself to thank for providing a vague problem description.

From the "Run" box try;
regsvr32 %windir%\system32\appwiz.cpl

regsvr32 %windir%\system32\webvw.dll
to rebuild several *.htt files

If unsuccessful try
sfc /purgecache
sfc /scannow

Or try the regedits described in;

If the problem persists, you'll likely need to perform an in-place upgrade.

Might be a damaged permissions problem. This article may help.

The article is a little deceptive. At step 7 create a new database.

| Ok sorry it was vague. Now I have made it through the scripts you provided
| below up to the point of the registry work. Now when I try to install or
| uninstall I get installshield engine (ikernel.exe) could not be launched
| ......access denied. Any ideas about that?
|
| Thanks,
| Jack

Well that was edgucational I did like how the MMC panel functioned. However
I have not had success. Interesting thing is it is on install and uninstall
of programs it errors out. Even when I go to update Internet explorer it
looks at the udates that are suitable but when it comes to actualling
installing it just stalls out. I have to go to taskmanager and kill
mshta.exe or iexplorer to get it to recover. I have done two things recently
that could have caused the problem.

1. I installed MSDE database for cambridgesoft's chemoffice 2005 product
2. I used a disk cleaner called clean center
3. A setup DCOM for a OPC client for new software (control Station)
Generally it has run fine but I get a lot of disk read now and the install
uninstall errors. That is about it.

Any ideas?

I can't tell. Did you restore the default permissions? There's no telling
what damage might be done by these "cleaner" things. They usually do more
harm than good.
