this is the CPU specs of the one im using now. can i do anymore upgrades on this?

ASUS MB (CMX-something... sorry i forgot)
P3 800 Mhz
GForce4 128MB
1024 SDRAM
SB LIVE Sound Card
SATA Controller Card
80 GIG 72000 RPM HD/SATA
20 GIG 54000 RPM HD/IDE
ASUS 54x/16x/8x CDR/RW/DVD
3COM 10/100/1000 NIC
PCI INTERNAL MODEM

so is this still worth keeping??

The only thing that looks badd on that is the P3 800 Mhz, but i dont know how easy it is to upgrade the processor, being a laptop user myself

well it's really easy upgradin or replacing a processor on a desktop. problem is p3 only has up to 1 gig max on its processors.. i think. so im thinking dumping this board and just getting a new one where i can use a p4 processor and just put in all those old stuff that i have in... will sdram work on a p4 board??

get something like a P4P800E-Deluxe, a 3.0GHz P4e Prescott, 512mb (2x256mb sticks) DDR400 PC3200...

that should give you a kickass PC.

Built in SATA too

I would imagine you could flog the 800MHz, MOBO and RAM for a fair bit too

no - you need DDR Ram for any new P4 board

Try and make sure its at least PC3200 (DDR400) also, it matches the speed of the CPU so max performance

I'd either:

a) Replace motherboard/RAM/processor.

b) Sell the machine as it is, not sure how much you'd get for it, probably not as much as you're expecting.

c) Buy a new machine, keep the old one, network the two.

It's still a fairly respectable machine, I'd probably go for option (a). You may also need a new PSU if you upgrade.

What is cheaper? Two sticks of 256mb or a 512mb stick? does it really make a difference?

yes - if the motherboard has dual channel capability then it makes some difference, so long as both sticks are identical.

im back. ive just bought this new board two days ago. asus p4c800 deluxe. nice. also got a 2.8+HT processor yesterday and im putting it together today. now what i forgot i didn't get a new PSU for my tower.. will a 300watt psu be ok? also got the ram that you guys suggested here. now what i forgot are network cables... i was looking forward to crushing my brother on dawn of war.. hehehe

one more thing... im worried about some heating problems on this new one that im building... will you suggest water cooling? its not on my budget right now but whats the cheapest pump that i could get...??

you want more than a 300w...

the stock cooler will be fine - get a couple of 80mm case fans and your dorted.

badsektor - get ur self atleast 400/450w PSU

i got the mobo and a P4 3.2 - and i put it in 1 of these cases - have a look

very good for cooling !!!

...............

evh - stay away for PC world unless ur getting it for free - take it around to a local compter shop - you could also check the news paper and see if theres any adds !

sound like ur have a windows problem and might need to reinstall it or get windows XP.
or it could be a memery problem - might need some more !

i tried that link that you gave me gonnagetu and looks like the xaser3 would do. any way it says no PSU... will 400 be enough with all those fans in there? so no need for water cooling on this one?

i'm not sure m8 - i was told to get 400/450 min - i got 550 just to be safe, also get power protection - and stay away from n-tec PSu's

only time u would need water coolin is if your overclock by alot - or if you have money to burn.

it always comes down to how much you want to spend and how much is in the bank

there is a way to find out how much W you need - mabye one of the other member know how to work it out ?
