Is this part in the aftermarket?

Over the years I have opened up IBM Intellistations, HP Vectras, Dells,
etc. One thing I have noticed is that they often have a rubber "hood"
traveling from the CPU fan to the back of the case. This part absorbs
a lot of the vibration and redirects most of the noise the CPU fan puts
out. I have never been able to find this part in the aftermarket. Is
anyone aware of a source?

TIA -

Kind regards,

come to think of it your right, but I did notice the newer dells using heat
pipes on the
cpu with the hood. you probably won't see the hoods as many homebuilders use
different
heatsinks and fans.

'Fan ducts'

I've got an old DELL with one, but it's plastic. I've never seen
rubber ones, but I suppose it's possible for them to exist. Your best
option would probably be to make your own duct.

I'd bet that the ductwork you're describing is highly
specific to each system board, heat sink, fan and case
combination. If you're thinking about trying to add the
same feature to a system without one you might look into
flexible, cuttable tubing. One possibility that comes
to mind is the kind of stuff garages use to vent auto
exhausts out the doors,

My case came with one! The only diffrence is it is mounted on the side
where a fan could be mounted. It does not touch the CPU fan or match up
exactly, but it is there and I think it helps. It allows the CPU fan to
pull air from the side of the computer intead of actually using the air in
the computer.

i think its a good design - and it must work as dell obviously make millions
of them
and the dells i have heard are pretty quiet

and before a queue forms to slag them off
dells + the brands you mention are big sellers to the office market
so have to be fairly quiet

no overclocked 2.4 upto 3.4 desk tops please !

Try searching ebay for the particular make and model of computer.
Sometimes you can find old Dell cases (for instance) that don't get any
bids. Contact the seller, and he might sell you the duct alone.
