Is this a virus?

My WinXP and NAV are up to date within a couple of days. Symptoms are: 1)
Trying to use dial-up connection causes re-boot. 2) My USB scanner
disappears while I'm using it and has to re-installed.

I've run a full Norton scan and removal tools for Blaster, Netsky, Mydoom,
and Welchia.I need suggestions for further diagnosis and/or removal. TIA!

My money will be on a hardware device conflict. Check your computer
properties, the device manager; see if any devices indicate a problem.

Have you recently installed any new software or hardware?
As mentioned by Norman, elsewhere, it is most likely a hardware conflict -
either memory allocation blocks or, more likely, IRQs.
What you can do is remove the modem via the control panel - add/remove
hardware (not physically) and reboot. The system will automatically
reinstall it and, if that is one of the conflicted devices, it should now
be OK.

Nice try, but Device Manager says "No."

Does the screen flicker? Sometimes the device manager doesn't
indicate a conflict but one exists. You have to look for other little
clues here and there. For instance, occasionally my mouse stops
working when I'm rebooting. I know this is a problem when my
mouse is hooked up to the IRQ 12 Mouse port. I can
immediately remedy it by hooking it up to a USB port. I just
prefer to have a mouse hooked up to a mouse port. <g> The
device manager doesn't provide a clue as you would think it
should... nothing gets tagged with the ? or the !. I really don't
understand "why" it happens to my system. XP has really been
a reincarnation of Windows 95 PnP. Microsoft reintroduced
the same dang bugs that the first Windows 95 had and they
won't admit it, but every XP system out there is living proof!

<g> Hope that helps you.

Still no joy! Uninstalled modem, ran diagnostics, then tried to log on.
Dialed correctly, connected, but re-booted after "Verifying ID and
password."

It really does sound like a hardware problem.

Power off. Unplug the scanner, all other USB & external devices except
mouse and keyboard. Boot up and try dial-up.

No joy?
Power down. Open case and unplug CR-Rom/CD-RW/DVD. Remove all non-vital
cards - eg. sound card. Boot up and try dial-up.

Still no joy? Try another modem if you have one, but start wondering
about the power supply.

Maybe a driver conflict, then. The interaction that you describe is fairly
shouting some kind of conflict with the hardware.

(BTW, I am flat broke; that is how much money I lost!)

Hey, let's try and lose the sarcastic tone first. You are the one who asked
for help and it is being provided, free and on 'take it or leave it' basis.
That's how newsgroups work.

Having gotten that off my chest, you can set an environment variable by
going to a command prompt and typing "set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1".
This will enable display of devices that are installed but not in use as
well- however you still need to check the option for 'show hidden devices'
under the view menu in device manager.

The problem is associated with the Belkin Wireless LAN Monitor; it only
occurs when this task is running. I'm still puzzled with how to prevent it
(aside from the obvious).

A few thoughts to help determine exactly what the
problem is

1. GO to control panel>system> click on the advanced
tab>hit settings under startup and recovery>and then
checkmark write an event to the system log and send an
administrative alert. Make sure the box marked
automatically restart is unchecked. Now when you dialup
see if you get a bluescreen instead of it rebooting, from
which may or may not tell you what driver is causing the
conflict.

2. If have administrative tools loaded on computer go to
event viewer and look under applications and systems and
see if any errors were posted at same time as computer
rebooted.
