On my W98SE desktop computer. I knew that there were just 2 things that had
to be showing in MSConfig for the computer to operate Scan Registry and
System Tray. I added Zone Alarm and my AV as well. Is it the same in XP HE,
are there certain items that must be in the Startup list meaning that I can
disable the others that I don't want to start up when the computer starts.
I have had a look in the list and most of the items listed, I don't know
what they do so daren't disable them. I would be grateful for any guidance
you can give me. Want my computer to be kept running at its best performance
possible.

Hi Lynn

If you want to, you can disable everything in msconfig>startup. That option is used for trying to solve bootup problems. You only nee to enable those items that *you* want to start with Windows.

Thanks for the reply Will. So if I disable everything else other than my
Zone Alarm and AV do I take it that they are the only things that will be
running in the background, up until I start any progs individually. I know
I will then have the message about Selective Start up but if I remember
rightly I think I have the option 'never to show the message again'.

If I press Ctrl+Alt+Del which gives me Windows Task Manager you get listings
in there. In Applications at the moment I have 3 things running and CPU
usage is fluctuating between 0% and 5%. Processes are 33. Are the Processes
these items running in the background that are in Startup in MSConfig?
